As part of our bootcamp, the 4th project is to create an app on a wellness field of our choice, in two weeks with a teammate.

Splash screen of our app

For this project, i paired up with Ayshe, a UX/UI designer also part of my Ironhack cohort.

We need to decide in a list of wellness field for the app we will working on. We both naturally choose “sleep” and how screens might affect our nights prior to bed.

There is a lot of “sleep tracking” activity, but not really apps that delivers advice or guideline on how you can get a good night of sleep.

🔍 Secondary Research

First we need learn a little more about sleep habits by doing secondary research.

We learned that :

  • Over the past 25 years, duration of sleep decreased by 18 minutes
  • Average sleep time is now 7 hours and 47 minutes
  • By 1 A.M., 1/10 people are not yet in bed because of technological distractions
  • Poor sleep has negative effects on body and brain.

Sleep is important and is often very not valued so much. Often, the possibility to improve with simple principle is not something people are aware of… Let’s see make sure of that in a survey.

Our competitive analysis of the existing app

🗒 Primary Research

Photo by Laura Chouette on Unsplash

o get to know our users, and focus and their needs, and habits, we created a survey and asked everybody we know to fill out this survey. We had more than 80 results.

  • 73% felt they needed more sleep
  • 55% of them are taking their phones in bed
  • 74% are favorable to have support to reduce screen time (!!)

⚠️ More than 85% of them thinks using phone before falling asleep affects a little bit, or more their sleep, while an average of 70% of them would like to reduce their screen time globally.

56% of them think they can’t reduce their screen time without help…

We have our insights, now to get ever better data, we made interview

👩 JTDB Interview

We talked about night routines and motivations behind the device usage in bed.Even though the users have different purposes to spend time on their devices, they all need that transition moment (of spending time with their screens) before falling asleep.

But there is one big issue about the internet; it has no limits and there is nothing to stop them other than themselves.

“I need that transition moment before falling to sleep”

Hélène, one of our interview, said that she really needed that transition to make the break from her day, so we don’t want to take away this from her, but we can work with a solution to improve this habit.

Haluk, another of our nice interviewee, told us that he knows a lot of this time on his phone was useless. They all are aware that screen before bedtime was a bad habit but they don’t know the extend of it

❓Problem Statement

According to our secondary and primary research we defined our problem statement which is: to search for a solution to help people reduce their screen time.

How Might We help people to reduce their screen time before bed

📩 Empathy Map

Our idea is to propose users the information they need about their sleep transition and provide them tools to set up their bedtime flow.

Using our secondary research, and the good pratices of the WHO to improve your sleep habits, we could try to invent a users flow.

➡️ USERS FLOW

Our users flow

📱MID-FI

The first flow for our MIDFI

As defined by our user flow, we were able to produce those 5 screens for the mid-fi.

Screen of input date of birth, then sleep recommendation, and to finish set up, the hour where you would like to wake up.

🚗 USABILITY TESTS

With our first mid-fi prototype, we were able to get some feedback.

  • Too much info without explanation, the home screen with all the steps
  • Can’t see the status of everything rapidly : which steps have notifications or not ?

🌕 MOODBOARD

Our beautiful moodpboard

Deep blue from a calm sea, and white from the cloud when you sleep… a dreamy app …. 🌟

🍎 BRAND ATTRIBUTES

From our google slides

MINDFULNESS because the app should make you aware that a good night of sleep will only come from you, and it is a state of mind. This app is a COMPANIONSHIP that will help you and guide you, and should be customizable and not intrusive. And CALM the app should stay really simple, with a few screens and feel relaxing….

⭐️ PROTOTYPE

Here is a first glimpse at our beautiful protoype….

TRANSITION, Make sure to select “Fit — scale down to fit” in top right corner !!

Don’t hesitate to give feedback about the prototype !
